Hotel Okura was designed Yoshiro Taniguchi and Hideo Kosaka and opened in 1962. It is located opposite the American Embassy and has been the hotel of choice for Presidents and celebrities over the decades. The opening of the hotel (in time for the 1964 Olympics) is considered the moment Japan returned to the international stage following WWII. The hotel is due to close and bulldozed to make way for a new hotel. There is a petition to save the historic hotel here.
