The first printers’ mark was created in Mainz, Germany by Fust and Schoeffer in a Bible that they published in 1462. They created the trademark to guard against piracy and it served as a seal of quality.
The marks were relatively small and usually appeared on a title-page or accompanying a colophon at the end of the book.
In publishing, a colophon is a brief statement containing information about the publication of a book such as the place of publication, the publisher, and the date of publication.
