Ron Arid made the first Rover chair in 1981 and it became synonymous with the 80's. At the time he saw it as a Duchampian ready made rather than anything to do with design. The first chairs were made at his One Off studio in Covent garden and Rolf Fehlbaum, the chairman of design at Vitra, was one of the first people to turn up and buy one. A year later fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier knocked on the door and asked to buy six. Ronnie never looked back.
