Prada Marfa, an art installation by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, has been saved. This store is stocked with six bottomless bags and 20 right foot shoes (to deter thieves obviously) and is so exclusive it never opens. Unfortunately, the Texas Department of Transportation considered it a roadside advertisement and declared it illegal. After some bickering, a rather clever person suggested leasing the land underneath Prada Marfa and registering it as an art museum. Problem solved – there, that wasn’t so hard was it.
Marfa is an art oasis in the middle of nowhere – well it is somewhere but a somewhere most people would choose not to go. Artist Donald Judd did choose to go there and established his practice on the edge of Marfa in the 1970’s. Since then, Marfa has never looked back.
